INSERTING LINKS INTO YOUR WEBPAGES

Characteristics of Links

Clickable text or image (indicated by pointer/hand) - Click leads to another location.
Hypertext - underlined, blue by default (color changes to default purple after link is visited)

Hypermedia - image or part of image (image map with hotspots)

      INTERNAL
Connects the pages in a website - also called a local link
      EXTERNAL
Refers the visitor to another website - also called a remote link
      MAILTO
Activates the visitor's browser's email capabilities (if set)
      NAVIGATION
Gives the visitor convenient access to the different sections in a website
BOOKMARK Gives the visitor a way to locate specific information in a document.

To Insert an Internal Link
  • Highlight the text (or select the object) you want to identify as the place for the viewer to click.
  • Click the LINK button (the chain link) on the toolbar.

  •
  • In the INSERT HYPERLINK dialog box, type the file name of the target document and extension in the address box or browse to find the file name and doubleclick it.
  • RECOMMENDATIONS:

First, create the document to be linked to, even if it's blank. Otherwise, you have to type in the name of a document that doesn't exist, and then you have to remember to create the document later!

Use the BROWSE command so you won't have the opportunity for a typo or memory lapse. In this way the exact filename and extension will be entered into the HTML bracket.

Use relative links in your web folder.

To Insert an External Link
Follow the first two steps above.

In the LINK TO box, type in the full website address of the page (URL).

      EXAMPLE: http://www.mcsdga.net
    RECOMMENDATIONS:

Copy the address you want to use as a link and paste it into the INSERT HYPERLINK box; you can do this by highlighting the address (in the browser's LOCATION BOX, in a Web document, in an email message, or in a wordprocessing document) and copying it by using the keyboard command: CTRL+ C. Paste it in the INSERT HYPERLINK dialog box with the keyboard command: CTRL+ V.

Create and minimize another html/wordprocessing/spreadsheet/database document and keep it open while you are on the Web. When you find an interesting address, copy it and paste it into this document. Later, you can organize the new links and add them to your webpages.  You can also collect text this way. Although you can copy and paste Web images into most documents, you will find it better to save the image.

To Remove or Correct a Link
    Highlight the underlined words.

Click the LINK button on the toolbar.

Click REMOVE LINK or correct the link in the text box.

NOTE: Sometimes the underlining (indicating a specific link) will continue when you add additional text below or above a link, even if you don't want this new text linked; just follow the above steps to remove the underlining and the links.
