UNDERSTANDING BASIC WEBSITE CONCEPTS


DEFINING A FEW TERMS:  HOMEPAGE, WEBSITE, WEBPAGE, HTML, LINKS


1.   Homepage

    • Term frequently used as synonym for website

    • Beginning, first, or main page of a collection of pages

    • Main address, or URL (Uniform Resource Locator) for the website

    • Usually a "screen" in length, no more than two

    • Usually named index.htm

    • Limited in "weight" to approximately 50 KB (all files, html and images) to keep load time to a minimum

      TYPICAL COMPONENTS

      • Identification of the organization or individual

      • Contact information for organization and webmaster

      • Links to the main sections of the website

      MCSD COMPONENTS

      • School name

      • Street address

      • City, state, zip

      • Phone and fax number

      • Muscogee County School District text link

      • Webmaster contact mailto link

      • Links to the main sections of the website


2.   Website

      CHARACTERISTICS

      • Collection of webpages (html documents), each with a unique address (URL)

      • Information about an organization/individual and a special interest or focus

      • Purposes: to sell, to inform, to pump ego

      • Recommended links


3.   Webpage

      • One html document of indeterminate length (one line or 25 printed pages)

      • The display size varies with the designer's and user's screen sizes and display resolutions.

      • The number of printed pages varies with user's printer setup.


4.   HTML

      • HTML = Hypertext Markup Language

      • Multi-platform

      • Code (tags) inside brackets

EXAMPLE:
To insert and center a line of text, this is the HTML code:

Notice the pairs.

The slash in the second item cancels the command.
